We're not in Kansas Anymore

Last Thursday we were at the opening of the last exhibition of the MACBA, one of the art centers where cooking is the twenty-first century, once again succeed in a risky gamble. While it's easy for a museum of this kind is known names pull in the queue to ensure entry into this place takes the challenge of bringing people to claim them names ... in this case is the German Bayrle Thomas, one of the greatest exponents of Pop Art European colorful and irony the first floor of the museum, as a differential may notice that not only make more or less colorful prints, but gives much of his work a touch of irony on reality of the world in which we live. A real pleasure to discover his art and a sense seen in the tower that has wallpaper on the inside (including land) with allegories to the sexual liberation ... very, very interesting. Until April 19. Plaça dels Angels 1, Barcelona.

Paul Strand Retrospective 1915-1976

A few days ago we were at the opening of this exhibition in Barcelona. It is curious, you can spend a decade with Barcelona and Madrid are a good display of some classic photography and is now match that of Walker Evans in Madrid and this in Barcelona. Older words, not only talking about one of the great works but also unlikely to come to light, much less in Europe. Since then the effort he has made these people is commendable and deserves exposure spend a good time. You'll see that does not conform to reflect what is happening around them but also imbued with a search for artistic expression closer to cubism as any other movement. A real luxury. Admission is free the first Saturday of the month. Fundación Colectania. Julián Romea, 6 D2, 08006 Barcelona.

Casa Gispert in Borne

We spoke the other day when the Borne square was full of food shops, salting, canning, wholesalers ... there are still some places where it dropped to purchase quality-adjusted prices. Casa Gispert going to be the best shop in Barcelona nuts, here are some of the supply Catalans Michelin stars, is the reason? Own toast brick oven, excellent product variety, professional treatment, with a place alongside Santa Maria del Mar is a delight, as well are always introducing new products today is oil, artisan chocolates tomorrow ... but what they do are always different delicious hazelnuts, salted almonds, toast ... a vice, and try trusts, thinks that since 1851 only have to convince people. Eating in Barcelona, Cal Pep

A mythical place, since the days of Gato Perez (when they had the room next to the old Zeleste Night Club). After 25 years spreading the good food at Borne. Call tapas bar this institution is almost an insult, say that their food and rations are the best that can be tested today in Barcelona. The place is always full, which is not cheap, that there is much room and the tables are almost nonexistent. Anyway, people will again prove their specialties hoping that nothing ever changes, clams with ham, cod, cockles or mussels sautéed in the pot. Plaça de les Olles 8 93 310 79 61, Barcelona.

Casa Leopoldo in Barcelona

Kill two birds with one stone, we recommend a good restaurant in Barcelona and a tribute to the recent passed writter Vazquez Montalban and the creature of its fertile talent; Carvalho. Leopoldo house is one of those places authentic remaining in a Barcelona loses his soul every day. Reservation and sit down to eat fish from a beach or a good ham and try to start one of his specialties, the famous bull's tail or “Albódigas with sepia” (meatballs with seafood). Reserve some spaces for dessert, “tortell” is the best chance and take advantage of one of the bills more honest of the city. Atticus; Cult Shop in Barcelona

Gothic Barcelona discovered a store that just opened, a small treasure that collects some of the most desirable whim you can imagine, basically focused on the new culture of design and illustration, offers works by Gary Baseman, Mark Ryden, Alex Pardee or Jermaine Rogers elected to toys with care and taste (and sometimes sleepless nights hoping to hold one of these little treasures, sold in transoceanic hours). Yourself a whim, forget those products without a soul in which you typically spend your money at Atticus, pop down to choose something that really deserves the punishment. If you can remember that today is the official opening, what better excuse to meet?. C / Lledó 10 in Barcelona (near the Plaza Sant Jaume and Via Laietana). charlieandreu@telefonica.net.

Veronica, one of our favourite places in Barcelona has been moved to Raval. Whenever you are in doubt when it comes to find a place to dine; a central location, well-designed but not exceed, with a good terrace in one of the most peculiar of Barcelona, adjusted prices and correct rations, the food should be bad huh?, then going, which will serve to be passing by some of the best pizza in Barcelona. The brand of footwear Munich El Borne Barcelona chooses to open its first store itself. On the street Antic de Sant Joan, in the heart of El Born, one of the nerve centers of Barcelona. Banys Orientals, Cute Hotel in Barcelona

A good hotel in Barcelona for just over €100 double room in one of the 50 recommended hotels in the world for Traveller magazine, and it goes through my mind one of the best areas of Barcelona to start a vacation, next to the Borne area, close to the Gothic, a stone's throw from Las Ramblas and next to a metro station and several bus stops. Street with good restaurants and bars. If you can stretch a little more about suites are less than 150 € which is a luxury hotel with a separate entrance, almost as a single apartment, but with room service. The Watergate Bookshop

The square of Barcelona is a small oasis, wedged between the C / Tallers Ramblas and has a couple of pearls that every good traveler should know. Today attack this library and other places to stop following posts. Let no one be fooled, it is not a book to use, is almost certain that you will not find the book you want, yes, if you get here is easy to come out buying something, or a book of design, or graffiti art, a toy A couple of magazines ... that we do not lack variety, but you have to be a real freak to assess all its contents are very grateful that at least someone has the guts to leave the beaten paths of trade in the inner city and risk to show some counter is also required. We want them going very well. Pl. Vicent Martorell, 2. Barcelona.

The best sweet chef, Oriol Balaguer

Spanish confectioner and today without doubt the best chocolate treat. I will not dwell too much, you only say that one of his creations in 2001 won the award for best dessert in the world, the same dessert, the famous Eight textures of chocolate is a true masterpiece and is still for sale. I have not counted if they are eight or not but I can assure you that is unique, different chocolates in addition, individual desserts (in glass), biscuits and nougat (the kikos is another classic in the house). The prices are outrageous and not really worth. Plaza San Gregorio Taumaturgo 2, Barcelona.

One of those places makes you happy to recommend. Carles Abellán after converting its Comerç 24 in one of those mythical places of Barcelona has decided to raise the level of whole number of caps in an area as battered as the Paseo de Gracia. The place is cozy, with the appearance of old tavern, with blackboards, designs and products in glass in sight. Good tapas with a touch of classic and modern dishes or portions of the day. Highly recommended for its bikini ibérico, mozzarella and truffle, the bomblets, eggs starry nothing to envy to Lucio ones in Madrid. Dishes of the day or fresh fish, bread and beer at the point and efficient waiters. Some desserts, adjusted prices and excellent quality.
